Physical Education
Guidelines
In order to receive a high school diploma, a passing grade in Physical Education is required for grades 9-12
Excuses and Medical Students:
-
In order to be excused from a class, a student must have a note from a parent or guardian.
-
For an extended medical, a doctor's note must be submitted. The note should be turned in to the Health Office. The student will then be identified as a medical student and will be given an alternative program. In most cases, students will be assigned a sports packet to be completed.
-
Students on a medical will be assigned to the library during class. It is the expectation that students will check in daily with their teacher before they go to the library to work on their assignment. Part of the students participation grade will be checking in for attendance.
Lockers:
-
Lockers are available to store valuables and clothing.
-
Students must provide their own combination lock
-
Locks can be purchased in the school bookstore.
-
Lockers should be locked at all times to prevent theft! Do not leave valuables unattended
-
Team locker rooms will be opened by coaches between 7:00 and 7:30 am. They will be open again around 1:30 pm.
Clothing:
-
A complete change of clothes and sneakers is required. (No uniforms can be worn as proper PE clothes)
-
Students should be prepared to go outside in the Fall and the Spring.
-
Failure to comply will result in lost points and student responsibility to make up the class.
Selection Process:
-
Students in grades 11/12 will be able to pick their units. Students in grades 9/10 will have the opportunity to pick units throughout the year, but the pool unit and a unit in the weight room will be assigned as a requirement.
Attendance and Remediation:
-
If a student misses a class in Physical Education for any reason, they do not get credit for that day. Therefore, classes should be remediated to avoid failure. Every 5 weeks, a student is given one "free" class. Once the "free" class is awarded, any class after that should be made up. The weight room is open after school(1:45-2:45) for this purpose. Students wishing to remediate should report to the weight room, sign in and then work out for 30 minutes. ***Students will need their own transportation home. Full credit will be rewarded in all cases except if remediation for an unprepared, or a Class Cut. If remediation for an unprepared, only 4 out of 5 points will be rewarded back. Class Cuts cannot be remediated. Pool remediation is held after school in the pool or within the pool unit itself. Students sign in and swim a designated number of laps
Pool:
-
All students are required to participate in the pool unit in grades 9 & 10. Seniors and juniors are exempt. Only a doctor's note can excuse a student from the pool. Students on a medical will be given an assignment that will be completed in the Google classroom. Students will do this as homework.
Intramurals:
- The weight room is available after school for those students interested in participating in an intramural weight room program. Students can bring their own workout or the Physical Education teacher can help them build a program. All students are welcome! Transportation is not provided. Hours 1:45-2:45 Monday-Thursday.
Phone/Earbud Policy:
-
Students are asked not to bring their phones/ear buds to Physical Education.
-
If students do bring phones into class, the phones will be collected and placed in a bin that will be locked in the storeroom during the class.
-
At the end of class, the bin will be placed in a common area for students to pick their phones up.
-
Physical Education teachers are not responsible for phones that go missing or are damaged once the bin is placed in the common area, as students are asked not to bring them to class.
GRADING POLICY:
Participation/Social Responsibility & Safety = 70%Application of Skill/Strategy and Rules = 15%
Cognitive assessments = 15%
Participation/Social Responsibility & Safety is 70% of a student’s grade. Being changed into appropriate clothing and being on time means a student is ready to earn their grade for that day. Also, a student earns points for effort, safe and fair play, and self-control. Every day in class, students are graded on these factors using a rubric from 0-5.
RUBRIC:
-
= Student is prepared for class, demonstrates exceptional effort, safety, self-
control, fair play and respect for others.
4 = Student is prepared for class, demonstrates above average effort, safety, self-
control, fair play and/or respect for others.
3 = Student is prepared for class, demonstrates average effort, safety, self-control,
fair play and/or respect for others.
2 = Student is prepared for class, demonstrates below average effort, safety, self-
control, fair play and/or respect for others.
-
= Student is prepared for class, demonstrates minimal effort, safety, self-control,
fair play and/or respect for others.
0= Student has no effort or participation (for example, being unprepared or does
not participate)
Application of Skill, Strategy, and Rules is 15% of a student’s grade. Each teacher will use the rubric below to grade the Application Assessment. The application assessment will be based on skill of the activity, strategy and rules.
Application of Strategies:
4 = Always demonstrate strategies
3 = Sometimes demonstrates strategies
2 = Rarely demonstrate strategies
1 = Never demonstrate strategies
Application of Rules:
4 = Always demonstrate rules
3 = Sometimes demonstrates rules
2 = Rarely demonstrates rules
1 = Never demonstrate rules
Cognitive Assessments 15%
This assessment can be but not limited to quizzes, tests, exit tickets, etc.
