Course Description: A survey of United States history, beginning with the Native Americans and end with the Civil war. Students will learn to think critically about the significance of past events and make connections between broader historical themes. This class is reading and writing infused. It is intended not only to broaden students’ understanding of American history, but also to hone their reading, writing, and analytical skills.
Course Textbook: Prentice Hall: America: The History of our Nation
Contacting the Teacher: The best method for contacting me is through the e-mail address above. Students and parents are always encouraged to e-mail me for any concerns or questions and I will try to respond within 24 business hours.
Needed supplies: students ARE NOT allowed to share supplies this year so please make sure they have the following: this is for IN-PERSON instruction

- Blue or black pens
- Colored pencils
- EARBUDS!!!!!
- Positive attitude ☺

Grading and Evaluation: Throughout the year there will be numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their abilities and comprehension of the subject matter. Assessment activities will include chapter tests, vocabulary quizzes, in-class activities, participation, and home learning. On the subject of participation, keep in mind that history is an ever-changing study of the evidence left behind by the peoples of the past. Students are expected to actively engage in classroom discussions and activities.

Late Work: Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner. All work is due on the date specified unless the student has a valid excused absence. Extenuating circumstances will be evaluated at the teacher’s discretion. If an assignment is accepted, the teacher has the right to deduct points proportional to the lateness of the assignment. This does not affect late work accepted with an excused absence, which is governed by school policy. If you are absent, the assignment must still be handed in.
Attendance/make up work: Students are responsible for any material covered in class, as well as any announcements, handouts, or other information, whether they are present or not. Please check my Google Classroom often as work/announcements will be posted there. I will also post due dates on the classroom board. I also have a webpage on the school website. Students have a responsibility to ask the teacher for, and to complete makeup assignments.
Classroom Rules and Expectations: The Frontier Central School District Handbook and its policies and procedures will be enforced in the classroom. Additionally, students will be expected to adhere to the following:
- Show Respect: For yourself, your peers, teachers, administration, and school property;
- Be Prompt and Prepared: arrive to class on time and be prepared to learn.
Cell Phones: Because of hybrid learning, this is a work in progress this year. I will keep you updated on whether personal devices such as cell phones or tablets are allowed in the classroom this year.
Expectations of Student: History incorporates the study of a vast array of beliefs and cultures. Some of these topics may be controversial but are nonetheless essential to the study of our nation’s past. Students are expected to engage with and discuss course materials in a mature, unbiased manner. Offensive remarks will not be tolerated and will result in parent contact and consequences.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child.
Best Regards,
Mr. Kevin Sheffield
