• Homework is awesome!

Second Graders will have homework each weekday night.

Please look at your child's agenda every single night and initial that you have seen it.

Book Baggie- Each child will bring home a book baggie with books from the classroom inside of it.  Your child is to read or reread the book/s that they have brought home. Reading with your child on a nightly basis is very important at this young age.  The better habits that are instilled now, will only help your child to be successful as they progress through school.  The nightly reading experience should last about twenty minutes.  Look at this as a precious time to sit one and one with your child and give them your undivided attention.  Other books from the library or home may certainly be read during this time.

Book Log- In the front of your child's agenda, you will see a calendar for each month.  Please find the correct date, write down the number of minutes for each weekday.  If you and your child need to skip a night of reading, you may read during the weekend.  Throughout each week your child should read a minimum of one hundred minutes.  On Monday morning, agendas will be collected and minutes read totalled.

Spelling- Your child will be given a spelling list each Monday.  They will glue the list onto their agenda.  Please have your child practice spelling the words nightly.  On Friday there will be a written spelling test on the words.  Spelling, reading and writing all go hand in hand.  A good spelling foundation will help your child to be successful in other areas. (five minutes)

Math/ELA- please expect a review worksheet nightly.  Some nights your child will bring home a math sheet and on other nights it will be ELA related.  The purpose of this assignment is to reinforce skills from the classroom as well as to build good homework routines and habits. (five minutes)

If there is ever a problem with homework, please write me a quick note in your child's agenda so that I can take it of it in the morning.  Things come up and sometimes homework has to be set aside.  I understand this. However, if homework is not being completed on a regular basis, a parent conference may need to take place.

Try to make homework a special time to just be with your child for a half hour a day.  You are going to be shocked at how quickly this time flies by.  Enjoy it, you will one day miss it.
