• Hello New Families!

Here are some helpful tips and suggestions when preparing your child for kindergarten.

~Start getting into a schedule/routine. Practice going to bed at a set time and getting up at a school morning time. Help them find a quiet area at home that can be their daily place to complete any school work. A table or desk with a solid surface is highly recommended. Test it out this summer, make it a place to color, read, make crafts, etc. Even set up their supplies that they will need to complete work at home. Pencils, crayons, scissors and glue/glue sticks will be needed. Allow your child to practice using kid-sized scissors to cut simple items.

~Provide your child with as many experiences as possible this summer to expand their horizons. Go to the zoo, the museum, visit/plant a garden, take a trip, etc. Most importantly, discuss these events with them. Help them learn new words and how to express what they see.

~Encourage responsibility and independence. Have your child be responsible for small tasks at home. Like helping with laundry sorting, washing the dishes, cleaning up their toys - the first time they are asked! Again, discuss these activities. Count the number of socks in the laundry basket, sort them by color or size, and help put them where they belong. Bathroom habits are a real indicator of your child's level of independence and responsibility. They need to be independent in all bathroom matters for kindergarten.

~READ, READ, READ! I love sharing read-alouds with the class. I constantly share with the kids my favorite books and hope they will also become avid readers. Placing a book in the hands of your child is beneficial in so many ways! Allow them to "tell" you what the story is about, even before they can really read. Talk about the characters and how they can relate to them.

~Turn off the electronics and encourage personal conversations. Teach your child how to solve problems with others - in a kind way, of course! Get outside and let them use their imagination!

I'm looking forward to meeting you and having a great year!
