"The Raven" - A copy of the poem can be viewed HERE.

This poem is mostly about a man who is heartbroken over the loss of his wife. One night when he can't sleep, a raven comes into his room and begins to taunt him. The man believes the bird is sent by the angel of his lost wife, and goes mad with grief. In the end, his soul "shall be lifted, nevermore."

"The Raven" was written during the time of Virginia Clemm's illness, and demonstrates the agony Poe felt as he watched her suffer.

Our goal in class is to take each stanza and change the poetry into modern prose (regular language).
