    Short Story - A complete story that can be read in one sitting

     

    Macabre - horrid, ghastly, gruesome, horrifying, having to do with death.

     

    Foreshadowing - a hint in the story of what will happen later.

     

    Biography - the story of someone else's life.

     

    Romantic - style of literature and art that emphasizes imagination,

                          hope, possibility, heroes, emotion, and ideals.

     

    Cask - a large barrel used to hold wine.

     

    Amontillado - a kind of Spanish wine; in this story, a rare and fancy one

     

    Revenge - to punish for perceived wrong-doing

     

    Stanza - a "paragraph" in a poem

     

    Verse - a line in a poem

     

    Spanish Inquisition - a period in history when the rulers of Spain were 
                                      convinced everyone should be Roman Catholic
                                      and punished those they suspected were not.

     

     

    Pendulum - a swinging lever or device, weighted at the lower end

     

    Mad – insane

     

    Anxiety – distress caused by fear of danger or misfortune

     

    Concealment – the act of hiding something

     

    Dismember – to take apart, piece by piece

     

    Audacity – impressive boldness

    RHYTHM – the measured beat of each line in poetry.

     

    REPETITION – Repeating. Repeating. Repeating. Repeating.

     

    NARRATIVE POEM – tells a story.
