• Speech and Language Terms

    Here is a list of some common "speech terms". These are terms that you may see or hear when talking with the speech pathologist or when looking at your child's IEP (Individualized Education Plan):

    ARTICULATION - Speech sound production.  How well your child produces individual speech sounds.

    COMPREHENSION (RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE) - The ability to understand a spoken message.

    FLUENCY - The lack of hesitations of repetitions in speaking.

    INTELLIGIBILITY - The degree to which the average listener can understand your child's speech.

    PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSES - Techniques used by children to simplify speech when attempting to produce adult words.

    SEMANTICS - The meaning of words (i.e. vocabulary).

    SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST - An individual with a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology who holds both a professional license by the State as well as a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

    SYNTAX - The rules that determine the acceptable sequence and combination of words in a sentence (i.e. grammar).
