• </div 3rd Grade Reading

<brREADING: Our main goal this year is to develop independent readers that read fluently and comprehend what they have read.   The benchmark level for the beginning of 3rd grade is a level M/N and by the end of 3rd grade the benchmark level is a level P/Q.  Students will be taught at their instructional level (can read with support) during guided reading groups.  Throughout the year we will focus on word study, phonics, fluency and comprehension.

Your child will be working with resources from the new ReadyGen program, literature circles and book clubs throughout the year.   The daily instruction will include a whole group lesson, guided reading groups and small group rotations with a focus on teaching specific reading strategies.

The Common Core State Standards include six shifts that we will be focusing on during our ELA block.
The six shifts for reading instruction include:
    • Read as much non-fiction as fiction
    • Learn about the world by reading
    • Read more challenging material
    • Talk about reading using "evidence"
    • Write about reading using "evidence"
    • Know more vocab words

Good readers use a variety of strategies while reading.  Here are some helpful reading strategies:
    - Use the picture clues

    - Reread to make sure the text makes sense

    - Skip the unknown word, read on to look for clues and then go back to figure out the unknown word

    - Decode difficult words carefully

-Make a connection to another word that looks like the unknown word

    -Look for familiar word families/chunks

     SPELLING and WORD STUDY:

Your child can also practice his/her weekly spelling words on the Spelling City website.
Click below to go to the website for our class.

Your child will participate in activities with their list of words.  The students will record their spelling list each Monday in their agenda.  Please reinforce these words throughout the week and continuously throughout the year.  The students will be given a spelling test after we complete each skill.  It is important for students to develop the ability to understand word parts and special vowel combinations at this young age. Their spelling grade will be taken from their writing pieces.  Students should be applying previously learned concepts to their everyday writing.
