Practice Expectations
Practice is more important than talent. With steady, consistent practice, a student can make progress. Practice comes first in order to develop skills. With skills comes the reward of being able to play songs and eventually, join the orchestra! It is also important to keep in mind that practicing is not always "fun". Sometimes it is hard work but usually very rewarding once a goal is reached or a new skill is learned. When good patterns of practice are developed with discipline, consistency and parental encouragement at this young age, practice habits will last throughout the student's musical life and have an impact on many other life situations.
Students should practice a minimum of 100 minutes per week. Daily practice is very important; it is better to practice a little each day, than to play for longer durations less often. Further, students should be on time for lessons and orchestra, keep track of lesson times and be prepared with instrument, book and binder.
"Practice is the best of all instructors" by Pulilius Syrus, Roman author, 1st century B.C.
As your child's teacher, my job is to teach your child how to practice at home. Home is where most of your child's learning will take place.
