Grade 6 Social Studies
Content in grade 6 Social Studies focuses on the interdependence of the people in the Eastern Hemisphere. Middle School students enjoy studying the great civilizations of the world such as, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Great religions of the world are another unit of study. Feudalism, Middle Ages and the Renaissance Period are taught toward the end of the year. Geography and economics are used to draw relationships about social, political and historic aspects of life in the Eastern Hemisphere. Skills for writing DBQ’s are taught to begin preparing the students for the Intermediate Social Studies assessment in grade 8.
Grade 7 and 8 Social Studies
Social Studies content in grades 7 and 8 focuses on a chronologically organized study of United States and New York State history. Course content is divided into 11 units tracing the human experience in the United States from pre-Columbian times to the present. We connect political, geographic and social trends in United States history to trends in New York State history. The course builds on skills, concepts and content material to prepare the students for the Intermediate assessment in grade 8. As in grade 6, we begin to refine their writing skills for the DBQ’s to prepare them for the regents social studies exams in high school. Grade 7 studies include the Units from Pre-Columbian through “Life in a New Nation”, which is mid-1800s time period. Grade 8 studies include Civil War through the present.
