Math Learning Components:
- We begin each math session with a math journal problem of the day. I read the problem for students and they are to answer it in their journals using words and pictures. Questions get more difficult as the year goes on.
- Each day we learn a math lesson from the Math In Focus program. Lessons are hands-on and show the practical uses of math. They are scaffolded so that they progress from concrete to abstract so that children can grasp concepts easily. There is a workbook component to the program but we do not complete every page. I will send the workbooks home when we are finished with them. This becomes a great "extra practice" resource for you to use at home.
- We also complete our calendar activities daily. During this time, children act as "calendar helpers." They take turns guiding the class through identifying the date, counting the days of school, identifying the weather and temperature, and answering calendar related math questions. The class also sometimes completes a "survey question of the day."
