• Snack

Since we have such an early lunch time, I am planning to serve the class a snack around 1:20 in the afternoon each day. For the first week or so of school I will provide the snack. After that I will send home a monthly snack calendar. On your child's day please send in a nutritious, low mess snack for 20 children and 1 teacher. Please, please be sure to send your child's snack on his or her day. I don't always have extras on hand, so if you forget the children don't eat!

Due to students with allergies our classroom will be NUT FREE. Please, please, please get in the habit of checking the labels before you buy a snack for the class. Please do not send in a snack that says "manufactured in a facility that processes nuts" or "may have come in contact with nuts."

Here is a list of snack ideas:
    -crackers and cheese
    -fruit (grapes, apples, watermelon)
    -veggies and dip
    -animal crackers
    -cheez-its
    -pretzels
    - cereal

Please DO NOT send candy or gummy fruits in as a snack.

*Keep in mind that I am looking to feed the children something healthy to keep their brains and bodies going for an afternoon of learning. It's safe to assume that if your child will eat it, the rest of the class will too.

**Do you have a picky eater? Me too! Here is my policy with snacks...
I tell the children that they must try one bite of a new snack. (I talk to them about my hatred for carrots until I tried them for the 15th time and finally liked them.) If the child tries the snack and doesn't like it, he or she may pick one from the "extras bin." (Usually, the "extras bin" contains extras of snacks that we've had previously and pretzel rods.)
Since I have a nine-year-old I am well aware of how food consumption can quickly become a power struggle, so I try to be very low key with my picky eater friends. I encourage them to break out of their safety zone, but I do not push.

***Please encourage your child to plan on eating the class snack. It is much less work for you to have to remember to send in a snack once a month rather than every day.
