The main goal this year is to develop independent readers that read fluently and comprehend/understand what they have read.
*Students should enter 2nd grade reading independently at Level I, J, K and end at Level M/N.*Students will be taught at their instructional level (can read with support) during small guided reading groups.*Students will continue to build independent reading stamina.*Word study, phonological awareness, phonics, sight words, fluency and comprehension skills will be taught and practiced using the ReadyGen program.*Students will be bringing home a Baggie that will contain a book on the students independent reading level and a Reading Log. Please make sure your child's Baggie Book is returned daily and that the Reading Log is complete, signed, dated and returned the following Monday.WRITING
The main goal this year will be learning the writing process and working towards becoming independent writers.*Students will have a variety of opportunities to develop their writing skills this year.*Many pieces of writing will be published throughout the year (Narrative, Informative, Persuasive, Friendly letter, and Poetry).*Daily Writing journals will be used to practice correct sentence structure, capital letters, punctuation and grammar.WORD STUDY (Spelling)
The main goal in Spelling is that students should be applying previously learned concepts to their everyday writing. It is important for students to develop the ability to understand word parts and special vowel combinations at this young age.*Students will be given words that are from the ReadyGen reading program.*Five BONUS words will be added to the spelling list. The Bonus words are "challenge words" that are chosen from the other content areas.*Spelling lists will be glued into their Spelling journals and copied into their agendas.*Participation in daily spelling activities (in class).*Spelling test every Friday.*Spelling report card grade will be taken from how well they apply spelling patterns to their writing pieces.Please reinforce these words throughout the week and continuously throughout the year.SCIENCE (National Geographic Kits)*Forces and Motion*Sun, Moon and Stars*Living ThingsMany other health concepts and personal safety lessons will be integrated throughout the year.SOCIAL STUDIESThe main focus this year will be on community and family life, traditions and holidays, symbols, needs and wants, citizenship, voting and map skills.*Scholastic News is one tool that is used to teach Social Studies topics.MATHA focused, coherent curriculum, equal emphasis on conceptual understanding, and fluency with skills, use of concrete and pictorial representations, multi-step and non-routine problem-solving using Math in Focus program.*After a whole group mini lesson, students will be practicing the skill that was taught using concrete objects, pictorial-visual models following along with the use of their math workbooks to practice math concepts with guided practice as well as partner and small group work.It is important for students to master their addition and subtraction facts 0-10. Please help your child practice facts daily using their 3MM journal. The journal will need to be signed daily and returned to school on Fridays.TAKE HOME Binder: will be used as a way to keep the lines of communication flowing between school and home. Homework will be written in the agenda each day. The agenda will be in their binder.Please check and sign your child's AGENDA daily. Agenda's will be checked and stamped each day.
