    Summertime Suggestions

Summer is a great time to reinforce learned skills.  Looking for something to do?  Please consider the following:

    1.  Read to and with your child everyday.  Research continues to support that this is one of the most efficient ways to help children learn to read.

    2.  As your child is reading, talk about the story.  Make predictions.  As questions like,  "What was the problem in the story?", "Does this story remind you of any other story you read?"

    3.  Have your child start a summer journal.  They can write about what they did they day before, or what they would like to do today.  Look through the writing and find errors repeatedly made.      Show your child how to fix the errors and then check to see if there is improvement in future writings.

    4.  Find ways to help your child with money skills.  Children need experience using real coins.  Let them make change at the register.

    5.  Find ways to help your child with time skills.  If possible, purchase an analog watch.  Have them be your timekeeper!

    6.  Practice number identification and simple math facts.  Make it fun!  Use 3x5 cards to make games like Concentration or Go Fish.

    7.  Every child should have chores around the house.  When they assist you with chores, expect good listening skills.  Try giving directions in groups of 3 or more statements , then have your child      restate the directions to help "make it stick" in their minds.

    8.  Let your child help with meal preparation.  Measuring and following directions are valuable skills.

    9.  As your child is out exploring, have them take measurements with a ruler.  Ask your child to make comp
arisons.  Which is longer?  Which is shorter?
