                       Ways to Help Your Child

Your child will learn within the classroom, but to be the best student they can be; learning also needs to take place at home.  Please take the time each night to go through your child's take home folder with them.

One of the best ways to help your child....is read, read, read every night. Please give your child time to read to you every night. Your child should first go through the book, looking at the pictures and thinking what the story may be about. Then have your child read the story to you. If he/she gets stuck on a word, don't be quick to jump in. Give your child a chance to solve the word and if they can't solve it after a few tries, just tell them the word. To be a fluent reader your child will read the same book several times, so please enjoy these stories several times with your child. After reading discuss the stories to promote comprehension. Ask questions about the characters, settings, problem and solution.

Homework will also be given and please use this time to see and hear what your child is learning in school. When homework becomes a problem for your child notify me right away. Homework should be a quick review and a chance for your child to show you how much he/she is learning.

Please remember learning is everywhere and doesn't just have to be completed while sitting at the table. Practice spelling words, addition or subtraction facts while driving in the car.

Teach your child responsibility, by having them pack their book bag or folders as you watch to make sure everything is going back in. Also give your child one or multi-step directions and make sure your child follows through with those directions.
