The Frontier Central School District is joining schools across the state to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The New York State Education Department is recognizing the month by providing specialized instructional resources.
These educational tools highlight the historical and cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans both nationally and within New York State. The state-provided resources focus on history, civic participation, and equity. They are designed to align directly with the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework. While the materials are meant to enhance social studies lessons throughout the school year, they offer focused opportunities for deeper study during this designated month.
For the Frontier Central School District, the month-long observance provides a meaningful opportunity to celebrate its own student body. District officials emphasized that Frontier deeply values the unique diversity that students bring to the district, noting that these varied backgrounds and perspectives are what truly make the school community what it is.
Bringing these celebrations directly into the classroom, students from Ms. DeNisco's classes participated in a series of engaging activities to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. The students watched an educational video highlighting the extensive contributions Hispanics have made throughout the history of the United States. They also explored traditional art by decorating ornaments with Mexican themes. To foster an interactive learning environment, the classes hosted a competitive Trivia and Scavenger Hunt. Finally, the students created a collaborative "Unity Wall," where they chose a Spanish word, quote, or phrase to describe their personal feelings and connections, culminating under the shared message, "Somos Unidos."
