Students with wooden flags

Will Maher’s Eighth-Grade Technology classes at Frontier Middle School hit a milestone with an ambitious project that makes wooden flags for area veterans.

Students made 100 flags this year as part of a “Custom Wooden Flag Project” that will be given out to veterans in the Frontier Central School District, as well as other area veterans and others lucky enough to receive one.

Maher, who owns a tree service company, salvages hardwood (ash, maple, hickory and oak) from which the flags are made. After drying, the rough-cut lumber is cut to length, run through a planer, then put through a jointer, before being cut to size with a table saw.

Maher, a combat veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps before embarking on a teaching career, has coordinated this project for a few years and says it is the most satisfying of his 17-year teaching career.

“It’s really cool,” said Maher, who gave special thanks to Mr. Monaco as well as the Frontier administration for their unending support, funding and guidance. “It’s just a great project.”
