Frontier Grad Heads Back into Professional Football

Jake Schum and his dog at the gym. A former Frontier Falcon, Cleveland Brown, New York Jet, Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Green Bay Packer will once again play football professionally.

Jake Schum, a punter who also played for the University at Buffalo, was selected on October 16 on the second day of the XFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Vipers.

In an emotional Instagram post, Schum celebrated his return to football after his career was derailed by a back injury.

"Over two years ago I hurt my back and was told by top surgeons that I would need surgery or else I would never be the same," he wrote. "That I would never punt again .... Or have the mobility in my spine without pain. I decided to take a chance on myself... and said no to surgery. I belived in my mind, I could heal naturally. I didn't know exactly how or how long...but I decided to take the long road. The hard road. The painful road, both physically and mentally. One thing that never changed in my mind... I was going to punt again... And I was going to play football again. It's been a tough journey."

The XFL season begins in February.
