Frontier football advances to first sectional final since 2013

The Frontier football team came out on the right side of an historic night at Joe Dietz Field, as the Falcons (8-2) scored the game's final 24 points to run away with a 37-14 win over rival Hamburg (7-3) in the Section VI Class A semifinals.

Just two weeks ago, the Falcons lost to the Bulldogs at Howe Field, 21-19, in the regular season finale.

But the postseason is when the wins matter most.

Frontier advances to the sectional final for the first time since 2013. The Falcons will take on top-seeded Jamestown (10-0) at 8 p.m. next Friday night at Highmark Stadium. The Red Raiders beat Williamsville South in the other semifinal tonight, 49-14.

At Frontier in front of a standing-room-only crowd of about 2,000 spectators, seniors Jack Novak and Gavin Borrello each scored twice, and classmate Vinnie Monaco had a touchdown and broke the single-season rushing record to power the Falcons offense.

Borrello scored on two kick returns immediately following Hamburg touchdowns. His second return – a 75-yarder – gave Frontier the lead for good, making it 20-14 just 26.5 seconds before halftime.

Hamburg RB Devin Collins caught a touchdown pass from QB Nolan Heavern to give the Bulldogs a brief 14-13 lead. Heavern also scored on a short run.

Hamburg leads the Paw vs. Claw series, 35-30-2, which dates back to 1955. Tonight's game marked the first time the two neighborhood rivals played in the postseason and twice in the same season.
