Coach recognized as 2021 High School Coach of the Week

Frontier Varsity Football Head Coach Richard Gray has been named the 2021 High School Football Coach of the Week for Week 1 by the Buffalo Bills and ADPRO Sports.

Coach Gray, who is also Frontier’s athletic director, was selected for leading Frontier to a 34-7 win over Williamsville South in the season-opening game.

“This is a great honor, but it is not just for me. All of our coaches and players played their part in that victory,” Coach Gray said.

The Falcons’ season is off to a good start with their record now 2-0.

Gray made his return to the sideline in 2020 after previously coaching Frontier from 2005-2010. During that time the varsity football staff received the NFL Coach of the Week recognition twice and the team won the Chuck Funke Bowl.

Football has been a part of Coach Gray’s life since he started playing in 5th grade. He played through high school and four years at Springfield College, where he was captain and offensive MVP. He coached running backs at Springfield and his high school team for two years before taking his talents to the Buffalo Bills, where he was a strength coach from 1998-2002.

He has been involved with various community-based programs, including collaborating with the Bills on the RISE High School Leadership program initiative, and running a youth flag football camp for grade 3-8 this summer.

Since resuming his head coach role, he has implemented the USA Football tackling system to dissuade from higher risks of concussions and neck injuries and incorporated hydration periods throughout practice. Also under his coaching, team members were honored as one of Section VI scholar athlete teams and 14 team members were honored by NYSPHSAA.

Coach of the Week winners are selected by a panel of high school football experts and winners from the Buffalo and Rochester regions will be announced at half time during the Bills vs Falcons game on Jan. 22, 2022 at Highmark Stadium. The recognition also includes a $1,000 grant from the Buffalo Bills and ADPRO Sports.
