    April 29/30. DAY FIFTY-NINE. Go over HW 24 in class. Day 59 notes. Review for "Soft Rains" test next week Thursday/Friday.  Before the test, review the slide presentation from day 58 and re-read the story while listening to the author read aloud; the interview at the end of the story is important: "Soft Rains" read by Bradbury.

    Apr 26/27 DAY FIFTY-EIGHT. Did you listen to the story read by Nimoy?  What questions did you ask/answer?  Read the poem by Sara Teasdale; we will discuss the questions to the poem. HW 24: Complete the timeline in your own words (Timeline).  Study this Slide Presentation, and then answer the five questions about the story; write out your answers to the five questions on the back of the timeline sheet if using a paper copy. If you're still having trouble, listen to this lecture about the story (begin at the one-minute mark) Discussion of Soft Rains story.

Begin reading and annotating the Gratitude article.  You should already have a paper copy in your ELA folder. HW 13: Take a picture of your annotations and answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper in ink using a pen.  Upload your work through Google Classroom (due Wednesday, Dec 23)
    Dec 17/18 DAY TWENTY-EIGHT.  Turn in the IR Worksheet through Google Classroom (or email me a copy). Present your book talk today in class.  Looking ahead to next week, we will read and annotate this article: Gratitude. And answer the questions.
    December 14/15 DAY TWENTY-SEVEN. Have your "rough draft" of your book talk ready for class today; we will be practicing the book talk in small groups. Class Notes for Day 27 HW: a) complete the IR Novel Worksheet (see the Independent Reading page if you are reading a biography or other non-fiction); b) practice your book talk and be ready to present on Day 28 (Thurs/Fri). Prepare your book talk using 3x5 index cards or Book Talk Worksheet Novel, but these will NOT be collected.

    Nov 23/24 DAY TWENTY-TWO. Turn in HW 11 before the beginning of class. On Google Classroom, read HW 12 and answer the questions 1-7 on a separate sheet of paper in INK. Take a picture of your hand-written answers and send it to me through Google Classroom.
    Nov. 19/20 DAY TWENTY-ONE.  Show me your IR book! During class, we will fill in HW 10, a Google Doc about our IR book choice.  We will go over the LW&W test.  On the CRQ, if you scored 14/20 or less, your homework will be to copy by hand in ink one of the model responses.  You'll find the responses in the Class Notes for Day 21. For everyone, HW: Answer the six questions about "Mrs. Flowers" posted in Google Classroom (HW 11).
    Nov. 16/17 DAY TWENTY. Find your copy of "Mrs Flowers" story. Annotate the text as you read, using all five reading strategies. Listen to the story as well: "Mrs Flowers" audio . HW: Go over Remote Lesson 9. (You do not have to answer the questions yet.  Be prepared to show me your IR book on Day 21.  
    Nov. 12/13 DAY NINETEEN.  Test on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  Let's follow the regular schedule.  When it's time for ELA, go to Google Classroom and click on the video link to join the class.

    Nov 2/4 DAY SIXTEEN.  Quiz on making annotations.  Start looking for an interesting book for Independent Reading! (The book you choose must be interesting.) Check Google Classroom for Remote Lesson 7. (You will be practicing two Constructed Response Questions due on Day 17.)     October 29/30 DAY FIFTEEN.  I will check your annotations from chapters 7-11. (Virtual students should send me a picture of the annotations from chpts 9-10 through regular email.) Answer this question in a well-written paragraph: Ch 5) p47-51. What reasons does the professor give for claiming that Lucy may be telling the truth?  [Re-read these pages carefully and use details in the text to support your answer.] Do your annotations for the "Foliage Afire" article look like this: Foliage annotations?     Oct. 21/22 DAY THIRTEEN. Hand in your annotated "Foliage Afire" and the three questions you answered on a separate sheet.  Let's discuss chapter two of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (LW&W).  What annotations did you make?  What unfamiliar words did you circle?  We may listen to some of the audiobook (see the Audiobooks page) or watch some of the movie.  Do these extra resources help?  HW: finish reading and annotating chapters 3,4,5, and 6 for Day 14.
    Oct. 19/20 DAY TWELVE. Proofread and correct all your mistakes on the Personal Narrative before you hit the Turn In button.  Begin reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (LW&W). Annotate right in the book! Use three of the five reading strategies per chapter.  Circle all the unfamiliar words. Class notes Day 12 HW: Read and annotate ch 1-2; complete Remote Lesson 5.  (Both are due Day 13)
    Oct 15/16 DAY ELEVEN.  Class notes on dialogue and specific language. Bring in your hand-written copy of the rough draft of your personal narrative (or share it with me on Google Classroom). Review rules for punctuating dialogue. Try these exercises to practice punctuating dialogue: Punctuating Dialogue Activity. After you have finished, look at this: Punctuating Dialogue Answers. Then read this story: My Father Was a US Citizen. How can you improve the writing of this story? HW: Finish the final copy of your Personal Narrative and turn it in through Google Classroom due Tuesday, Oct. 20 (at 11 pm).
    Oct 13/14 DAY TEN. What lessons does each personal narrative teach us?   Class notes for Day 10. You will have to write your own full-length personal experience narrative.  Here are the guidelines: Personal Narrative guidelines. Two options: you can expand one of the stories you have already written, or you can begin a new topic. Your rough draft should be close to 500 words. You should brainstorm and write a rough draft by Day 11 (Oct 15/16). Your final copy is due Day 12
    Oct 8/9 DAY NINE. We will go over and understand our mistakes from the "Reading in the Dark" quiz. We will look back at the three narratives and identify the single, central event in each story and the outcome of that event. Class notes for Day 9.Study the Elaboration Techniques on p. 1 of the ELA Text Pack.  Which of these techniques could you use in a personal narrative?  HW: Your story from Remote Lesson 4 (36-1) is due Friday, Oct 9.  If scored a 6 or less on the Constructed Response of the "Reading" quiz, then write out by hand the model paragraph.
    Oct. 5/6 DAY EIGHT. Look at the topics from 35-2 in Personal Experience Ideas.  Choose one topic and write a story about a memory you have (8-10 sentences). I will check your annotations from the three stories ("Papa," "Two Tix," and "Little Coaching").  And we will go over the fifteen questions you answered for homework.
    Oct. 1/2 DAY SEVEN. Complete the I-Ready in math and reading.  After the reading portion of I-Ready, log on to my Google Classroom and take the "Pre-Assessment for ELA 8".  Like I-Ready, it will not count for a grade, but do your best.  We need to know what your skills are.  HW: finish reading & annotating the three stories (from Day 5) and answering on a separate sheet of paper) the fifteen questions about those stories (due on Day 8)
    Sept. 29/30 DAY SIX. Quiz on "The Star-spangled Banner."   Look at the list of topics on the first page of this packet: Personal Experience Ideas. Choose one topic from 35-1 and write about it (8 to10 sentences). HW: finish writing this story for homework (due on Day 7) if you didn't finish in class.
    Sept. 23/24 DAY FIVE. Use your Classlink account to log in to I-Ready. Make sure you can log in.  Quiz today on "Reading in the Dark."  You will need to look at your copy of the story while you take the quiz.  HW: for next week, memorize the first verse of "The Star-Spangled Banner."  Quiz on Day Six. For the remote lesson read the following stories ( Two Tix, A Little Coaching, and Papa Was an American ) annotate, and answer the questions (questions for Tix and Coaching stories ) for those stories. You do not have to hand in any homework at this time.
    Sept. 21/22 DAY FOURClass Notes Day 4. Place  ELA Text Pack in the clasps of your pocket folder along with 20 sheets of loose-leaf paper. Review "Reading in the Dark". HW: re-read the story for the quiz on Day Five; watch the video for the Remote Lesson of Sept 21 (there will be a quiz on "The Star-spangled Banner" - just the first verse) on Day 6.
